R. Kelly paces US album chart
Geschreven op 16/06/2007 om 20:25
June 7, 2007 04:06 PM
R&B singer R. Kelly has notched his sixth No. 1 album with his latest offering, "Double Up," which sold 386,000 copies during its first week in stores.
Kelly's showing pushes Maroon 5 (music)'s "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" to the No. 2 slot on The Billboard 200 album chart, on sales of 172,000 copies. Billboard bases its chart on Nielsen SoundScan retail reports.
Linkin Park (music)'s "Minutes to Midnight" falls one rung to No. 3 with sales of 126,000, according to Billboard. Country singer Jason Aldean (music) debuts at No. 4 with 98,000 sold, and Daughtry (music)'s self-titled debut rises from No. 6 to No. 5 on sales of 69,000.
Rounding out the Top 10 are Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black," U.S.D.A.'s "Cold Summer," Avril Lavigne's "The Best Damn Thing," Michael Buble's "Call Me Irresponsible" and Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain."
R Kelly - Double Up
Geschreven op 16/06/2007 om 19:27
Double Up is R. Kelly’s 13th album (not counting the unreleased Loveland) and easily his most interesting. Perhaps not his best; but definitely his most interesting.
Double Up comes at an interesting point in Kelly’s life and career. Five years ago this month, Kelly was indicted in Chicago on 21 counts of having sex with a minor. Those charges would later be reduced to soliciting a minor for child pornography, seven counts of videotaping the acts, and seven counts of producing child pornography. Kelly still faces 14 of the charges. Five years, three albums, two world-tours and uncounted award show appearances later Kelly has yet to answer those charges in a court of law.
Or on wax.
This is part of what makes Double Up so interesting. Of course, entertainers have faced legal trouble before. In hip hop, the norm is for the accused to lay low for a minute, then emerge triumphantly with a “Not Guilty” song or interview that rallies the fans. With the exception of Jay-Z’s Guilty Until Proven Innocent (2000) Kelly has done neither; he’s showed no signs of slowing down or of being even vaguely aware of the charges that stand against him. In fact, Kelly actually has a song about being incarcerated. Best Friend is a classic R. Kelly ballad with Keyshia Cole (think: Sparkle) and Polow Da Don playing out a twisted tale of loyalty and suspicion.
Except for (maybe) the Swizz Beatz laced intro The Champ,, Kelly doesn’t make the slightest reference to his real life drama. Instead, he capitalizes on the hyper-sexual persona that he’s developed over the years. For the most part, the innovator who brought us Bump-n-Grind, Feelin on Yo Booty and Sex Weed sticks to the script.
Conceptually, Double Up has some question marks. The catchy title track featuring Snoop Dogg clears up the meaning of “doubling up”, but lacks any real party feel. Sex Planet is just plain wack… sounds like a corny parody of a slow jam: “Girl I promise this’ll be painless/we’ll take a trip to Uranus…” The Zoo is an unfortunate metaphor comparing love-making to all sorts of exotic wildlife.. “I got you so wet, it’s like a rainforest…like Jurassic Park except I’m your sex-a-saurus. ” Songs like this make it hard to argue that R hasn’t completely lost his mind. Oh, and Sweet Tooth and Rollin Up are pure filler. Real Talk is real comedy and Leave Your Name is even funnier.
The bright side is that Kelly does a great job of leveraging his industry clout to generate some pretty decent guest appearances. Trying to Get a Number is basically a singing contest between Kells and Nelly, Get Dirty has Chamillionaire getting, rather than riding dirty. Ludacris and Kid Rock help Kells capitalize on hip hop’s current infatuation with…well rock stars, on Rock Star. Plus, there’s appearances by T.I., T-Pain, and Usher. Counting the Keyshia Cole, Swizz and Snoop cameos already mentioned brings the number of platinum artists on this album to 11
So, not only does Kelly serve up T.I. and Luda on the same disc…not only does he feature his own closest competition in Usher and T-Pain… but he does it all while openly flaunting his addictions to wild nightlife, alcohol and drugs. And to top it off, he tosses in Rise Up as a tribute to the members of the Virginia Tech community in the wake of the recent massacre.
Without question, Double Up’s real mark is made by the universally appealing I’m A Flirt (remix) featuring T.I. and T-Pain and the equally radio-friendly Same Girl featuring Usher.
So, where does this one rank among the R. Kelly albums before it? It’s better than The Best of Both Worlds and R. but clearly lacks the vision and cohesion of a 12 Play or even TP-2.com. A true R. Kelly fan (you know who you are) once told me that only true R. Kelly fans can really feel his musical genius. Double Up is probably case-in-point. Long time fans are sure to love it; others perhaps not so much.
At least he seems to have given up his Pied-Piper thing.

"Rise Up" Now Available for Digital Download
Moved by the terrible events at Virginia Tech, R. Kelly has written and recorded a song of encouragement in memory of the victims and in condolence to their families. As the details of the tragedy were unfolding, Kelly was traveling across the country on his tour bus for a performance. Deeply affected by the news, he was inspired to write lyrics he shaped into a song entitled, "Rise Up," a moving anthem in honor and remembrance of the victims of this heartbreaking event.
You can support this cause by purchasing the digital single to help spread the message of hope and unity. R. Kelly, Jive Records, and Zomba Songs will donate 100% of the net proceeds from the digital single sales to the university's official fund, The Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.

NEW ALBUM R.KELLY
Geschreven op 20/04/2007 om 17:21
New R. Kelly LP Includes Akon, Jeezy, 'Flirt' — But No 'Closet' Till July
If you're wondering why Bow Wow doesn't appear in the video for his R. Kelly-featured song "I'm a Flirt" — even though the song appears on Bow's latest album, Price of Fame — well, it's because the video version is a remix. And that Bow Wow-less remix is now the official first single from R. Kelly's new album, Double Up, now due May 29.
Kelly's version features T.I. and T-Pain, and as the Pied Piper's camp tells it, the King of R&B (he actually wears a crown in the new video) had single rights to the song all along; it's an unlisted bonus track on Bow Wow's LP, and his label was barred from promoting the song to radio. However, that hasn't stopped it from getting airplay: In an unusual twist, Billboard is counting the two versions as one song on its singles charts, credited, a little confusingly, to "Bow Wow or R. Kelly (featuring T.I. & T-Pain)".
Tip and Pain are just a sample of the star power that Kells has rounded up for his LP. Young Jeezy, Akon, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell have all collaborated with the singer already, and Kelly's camp says he is still recording and just might pull in another major player from the Midwest for the project.
Unlike most of the R's albums, on this one he has opened up some of the production and songwriting duties to outsiders. Newcomer Lil Ronnie (who has also worked with Ruben Studdard) produced the "Flirt" remix, while award-winning songwriter Sean Garrett (Usher, Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé) also loaned his pen to a couple of songs. The Runners, known for their production on Rick Ross' Port of Miami as well as Young Jeezy's Kelly-assisted "Go Getta," have also supplied some tracks.
"It was definitely an honor to work with the R, especially since he doesn't work with too many producers on his albums," said half of the Runners, Andrew "Dru Brett" Harr.
"He really gets into his songs," added Harr's partner, Jermaine "Mayne" Jackson. "On one song, he set up a pulpit in the vocal booth, just to get that church feeling. He really looked like a preacher on Sunday."
And, to answer the question of all the fans who want to see more of Sylvester and all the "Trapped in the Closet" players, there is more to come. The next chapters won't be included on Double Up, but there is a DVD coming out in July that will continue the R&B soap opera (see "R. Kelly Heading Back To 'Closet'; Ready To Tee Up New Album").
Over the past few weeks, Kelly has kept his profile on the upside with a string of song cameos, including the original "Flirt," "Go Getta" and Fat Joe's "Make it Rain" remix.
This report is from MTV News.
Give R. Kelly A Call At The Chocolate Factory!
Geschreven op 20/04/2007 om 17:19
It seems as if R. Kelly has taken a page from Mike Jones’ book as the R&B singer has a phone number for anyone to reach him. While you don’t get to speak to Kells personally, you do get to hear a message from the singer as he previews songs from his new album, Double Up:
“What’s up yall’, this Kells, I’m glad ‘yall called. I’m in the studio right now…since ‘yall called, I’ma give ‘yall a snippet of what I’m about to hit ‘yall with. Hold on, turn it off…this song called ‘Blow it Up’ with Jeezy…and I got Young Dro on here, they killin’ it.”
Following this message is a brief sound byte of the song Blow it Up. After the song finishes playing, R. Kelly comes back on:
“Can’t give ‘yall the whole song. This next song I’m doin, it’s called ‘Leave ya name,’ you feel me?”
The song Leave Ya Name plays out like a musical version of an answering machine message. In a similar fashion, R.Kelly previews the songs Double Up ft. Snoop Dogg, Freakin’ In the Club, Put Some Money on It ft. Rick Ross, Hookin’ Up with Kanye West, and Rock Star with Ludacris.
As for the album, Kells promises the fans that it is “about 70% hip hop,” though it is not exclusively upbeat hip hop tracks, and will include some slow R&B.
After the message ends, you can leave your own message for R. Kelly. If you’re calling from a cell phone, the messaging system will text you with information following the call.
The phone number to reach the Chocolate Factory Hotline is 312-278-3965.
The album Double Up is set to be released May 29th.
